I am so with you on your point: "I think it’s a better use of your time to spend an hour staring into space than it is to spend five minutes looking at an algorithmically-derived feed."

I have to be very purposeful of my staring into space time and I often tell friends who are "stuck" to do the same.

And thank you so much for this great reminder. Making the art >>>>being online about the art.

Congratulations! That is fantastic news. I spent 15 minutes outside yesterday without a book or a phone. It felt like an accomplishment.

Incredible news about Dolly! Congratulations! What a feather in your cap!

You talking about the boxes that do things for us (especially women), reminded me of a fantastic episode of You're Wrong About where they discuss the Stepford Wives and all the ways that modern conveniences (and the patriarchy) can actually trick us into doing MORE work. It forever changed the way I think about productivity. And I love the majestic deer/twinkie analogy. Perfect.

Oooo, I have had that You're Wrong About episode downloaded and in my queue forever -- I'm going to listen to it next!

Thank you for this! Your description of our phones and internet being a creeping vine is so apt. I planted a type of vinca ground cover in my yard years ago that's like a vine. It spreads, and I knew it would spread when I planted it. It can be very pretty so I want it to spread, but only in certain places. And of course it doesn't always go where I want, and it can smother other plants that aren't as vigorous if I'm not mindful about how and where it's growing. It's easy enough to tear parts of the vinca out (as easy as clicking a mouse to close a window, even!) but somehow just because it's easy doesn't mean I'm always good about tending to it.

Right, and that's the thing about a creeping vine, even if we know that that's what it's going to do. Like, you knew the vinca would spread. That's its purpose. But that doesn't mean that you have to let it just choke out everything else in your garden.

I’ve been forgetting my phone a lot lately…

Maybe it’s my way of trying to escape to find time to be creative.

Thank you for the dead people message!
