Julie, did you watch Kimmy Schmidt? There's a bit in there about that--Titus tells Kimmy at one point, "You know how Al Gore invented the internet? Well, he also invented a rhythm for it. It's a powerful rhythm. It's called the Al-Gore-rhythm." Too funny!

YES on analog curiosity-finding. It's really the BEST part of going to garage sales or thrift shops--or traveling. Holding unusual (or new or novel) things in your hands, or seeing them before your very eyes. Being able to take things in with all five senses (though, taste, obv. has limitations in certain situations. LOL!)

I'll check out On Browsing! That sounds great! :)

That's hilarious! I watched some of Kimmy Schmidt but I don't think I saw all of it.

I'll let you get back to tasting books in thrift stores.

I love browsing! In college I always went to the library to get actual books for my research papers, unlike all my friends who just looked up journal articles online. Going to a particular section in the library, meant that I often found other books that were great for my research, that I would have never found otherwise! That’s why I don’t like to online shop. I want to see all the options. Whether that is every brand of flour or version of butter that is available at the grocery store. I like options, I don’t like to be told what to like or need or want. It’s why I also miss Blockbuster! Sometimes you don’t know what you want until you see it. I loved browsing the shelves at the video store, on Friday and Saturday nights to see what it is I wanted to watch. I suppose I can still do that on Netflix, and I do, but it’s not the same. So I’m all for browsing! Oftentimes, we don’t know what we are looking for until we see it. Or that there might be another option than the one we are looking for, but we would never know that, if we are constantly being shown the thing that we are looking up.

Yes! I’ve been really craving human recommendations. Whenever a person I like recommends something to me on substack, I look at every single link and it totally makes me curious and excited to try something new. I miss browsing at the video store. I still do that when I go to the library and I discover new things that way. On the flip side, I’ll admit that sometimes I get overwhelmed by all the options in a physical store, even a bookstore, because I want to read and see everything. So I have to be in the right mood.

I think this is what's behind my reignited love of thrifting and vintage shopping, because those stores are not curated or even necessarily very intentional, and you never know what you're going to find.
