I'm regularly regular, but not usually regulated!

Well , Julie, that was pretty great. And what I needed to hear. Thank you for your humor and “ordinariness,” yes, I think I made up that word. You walk the dog. You write. You ponder. You think about weird and wonderful things.

I worry about the middle schoolers I work with who all want to be famous You-Tubers or NFL stars. I knew since I was 9 that writing was my thing. That I wanted a quiet life of words and wonder. Two cats curled up on my lap, a good book at hand, and sunshine breaking through clouds after last night’s storm seem pretty perfect to me. That’s my great regular flavor for Saturday morning. Not interested in changing brands anytime soon.

Oh, that's interesting, about being a youtuber or an NFL star. I wanted to be an actor, and I did act in school plays, which turned out to be really helpful with writing characters. I do think about how, like, it's very hard to be a professional athlete, but anyone can start posting to YouTube, and I wonder if it gives them a false sense of hope.

I like your regular flavor! Words, wonder, cats, and books sounds like a great flavor to me.

This screams "focus group" results to me. Like they kept trying new things, "What do you all think of banana-wintergreen? Or maybe mystery flavor?" and the focus group (rightly) was like, "Uh, YUCK!" "No! For the love of Pete, no!" "We just want the regular flavor!"

Still, they could have at least considered Colgate Classic. 😂

Also, I would totally listen in on coffee "shop talk" with you, Julie! 😂 ☕🫘 Julie: "So, how's everything bean going?" Pile of used coffee: "With everything at a boiling point, I'm just trying to stay grounded, you know?"

This is hysterical 😂 But also i don’t know if you’ve seen that awful article written about Brandon Sanderson but the writer called Brandon boring so many times in it. And then Brandon’s response was so cool and powerful because he was basically like, “yeah, I am boring. I love writing and my family and my life. It would probably be hard to write an article about me.” His response was a celebration of regular and an acceptance of humanity and also the wonder of small things and I can’t stop thinking about it. (I have links if you are curious and haven’t seen it.) Anyway, the whole GREAT regular thing feels so in line with it!

I haven't seen that Brandon Sanderson thing! (Why would anyone write an article and say someone is boring?ugh) But yes, it's true, being great regular is a way to get things done while being yourself.

Right?! And the article was way meaner than just that. The journalist did not take a curious approach to his subject which baffled me. But regular people who take a curious approach to the world can do great things!

It sounds like it didn't work out well for the journalist, if everyone knows about it and is thinking they didn't do a great job.
