First, I salute you on your mission! It's an old book now, but I really liked Gretchen Rubin's The Happiness Project when it came out; not that you even said you wanted book recs (here, I am, just jumping in anyways, like a total Kuppet!) LOL! All to say, "You got this! I'm excited for you!"
ALSO, I love, love, love art thrift stores! :) There's an amazing one a few neighborhoods over from us and I'm always having to remind myself that I should TAKE stuff there, not buy more. Ah, well. :) Grist for the artistic mill--and such a low-stakes way to try out new things!
I think I have The Happiness Project somewhere in my house. It's probably telling that I started reading it (years ago) and then was like, "oh, nope nope nope, can't think about my own happiness, how would that even work????" and abandoned it after 20 pages. I think it's under my bed? Oof, It's probably been giving me dreams.
I'm so jealous you have an art thrift store near you! I WANT TO GO!
THANK YOU for linking to that article about translating Du Iz Tak?! Of course my first thought was, "why do they have to translate it at all?" but the article answered that. SO INTERESTING!
It would be super fun to go art thrifting with you! :) I 100 percent know you live in Maine, and *still* every time you mention Portland I think, "IS JULIE IN PORTLAND (OREGON)?" And then (every time) I'm like, Portland, Maine--doy! Sometime, ma'am--I don't know when, I don't know how, but someday we'll thrift and then fika (or at least, take a Cel-Ray break)! :) (And then vintage-book shop!) #idealday #sighswistfully
That article was so strangely fascinating! When I read it, I bookmarked it--and no offense to PW, but that doesn't typically happen with industry stuff. 😂 Not PW's fault, it's just there is so much, quantity-wise, the threshold for re-reading those articles is...very high.
SOME DAY! I have the "wait, MY Portland?" whenever anyone talks about some fun thing they are doing in Portland. And then they say an address that doesn't exist here, and I figure it out.
Aw, I'm so glad it resonated!!! All of this has been on my mind for months and months, and I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one. (Although maybe I'm not glad to hear it -- we should all stop people pleasing!)
Are you my twin sister? We’ll maybe not twin because we look nothing alike (did that make sense?) and I’m older than you. But I swear inside our heads we are exactly alike. People pleasing? Yep. Made a lifetime of it. You mean I get to be happy too? Happy first? No way! I need to read those books, prioritize myself, find those socks, and I need you to keep writing. Thank you for this. Things we know but never remember to apply.
This piece, whether you like it or not, was very pleasing.
Also very true, and relatable, and inspiring.
Signed, a co-Kuppet (reminding itself that everyone would prefer an exceptional sausage from a machine that only makes sausage instead of a mediocre sausage from a machine that's not sure what to be, though The Mediocre Sausage might be a good band name.)
Thank you, Stephanie! And yes, I checked with my dog, and he says he is in favor of continued dog pleasing.
Also I forgot for a sec that I threw that boat-driving photo in at the end and I was going to commend you for your excellent metaphor. But it is a good metaphor! Maybe I need to write a whole post about metaphorical boat steering.
I love all of this, Julie. I, too, deeply identify as a Kuppet. But now I have a hilarious mixing/blending/sausage-making sad clown metaphor to reflect on the next time I almost say yes to what is inwardly a giant no. So thank you for that!
Oof, yeah, I have such a habit of going for the knee-jerk yes when my whole insides are like "JULIE, NO."
Also can I tell you I'm just waiting for a die-hard Kuppet devotee to come here to tell me how wrong I am, and that it's an amazing and essential appliance? Until then, I remain, a Kuppet.

I also love your thoughts on translations! I think translations are fascinating, too. I loved reading this article about the translation challenges that crept up when they sold the foreign rights for Carson Ellis's Du Iz Tak? https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-book-news/article/73993-working-out-the-bugs-adventures-in-translating-carson-ellis-s-du-iz-tak.html
THOUGH--don't worry about reading anything! Only if you want to, OF COURSE!! Hugs, Captain Falatko!

I don’t think I’ve resonated with anything MORE than this post 🥹 from one people pleaser to another, thank you! Today, especially, it’s extra helpful!

Great read. I feel this is a battle many writers struggle with (well at least I do...)
I think it probably is something a lot of us struggle with!
Love this - I really needed to read this today! Though now I really have to resist walking in to my office job and resigning - gulp
I mean...if that would really make you happy, I'm not going to stop you!
You go girl (from an 80 plus year old girl
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much for the mention!

Hello my twin! Glad I'm not the only one!
Cheers to being in control of your own ship!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for ALL of this, Julie! You inspire me constantly.
Aw, thank you so much, Cathy!
Honestly, for a moment, I thought it was a picture from a boat my kids and I have “driven”—truly an excellent metaphor —I say, go with it 😊
If it was a boat in Maine, it might be the same one!
This piece, whether you like it or not, was very pleasing.

The Mediocre Sausage would also be a picture book I would absolutely read. Or write.
Although now I'm also thinking about if all of us had separate SAUSAGE-MAKING machines in our kitchen, and what that would even be. Or why.
Exactly. Let the sausage making artists do that, and we'll enjoy the fruits -- meats -- of their labor.
Please write The Mediocre Sausage. Is that a hot dog though?
I feel like it would be a banana.
I am a new subscriber, a writer, and this post just made me happy this morning. Yes! To all of it (esp pleasing the dog and driving the boat 😊)
Thank you, Stephanie! And yes, I checked with my dog, and he says he is in favor of continued dog pleasing.

I relate so much to all of this 💙 Thanks for the encouragement!
Oh, did this resonate... (and thank you for the shoutout!)
